The Birds

Ten years ago, I moved into a house with a sloping back yard which put my deck right in the trees. Suddenly, I was living in the world of the birds - Birdland! And being surrounded by these fascinating, fun, quirky creatures inspired a series about them and the adventures they would have. I've long since moved away from that house but the birds of my imagination have continued having their adventures in Birdland.
As in the Couch Party Series, the background for each piece are radio schematics from the 1950s. I glue them onto wood, add large amounts of texture and paint on top of them. Sometimes, I cover the schematic completely and wipe the paint away in certain places so the schematic peeks through. Other times, I leave the schematic completely exposed and only paint the animals so that the schematic is a more active part of the piece (this technique was inspired by the way I use the romance comics in that series). Two very different looks; both a lot of fun.
